My Bookshelf: Favorite Authors

What is a good way to tell if a book is going to be worth reading before you even open the pages? By knowing the author. Seeing a new book by an author I have already come to know and love is going to carry strong weight in the decision to read or not to read.

Sometimes it can be difficult to pick a favorite. A favorite book, a favorite genre, a favorite author. So…I narrowed it down to my top five…

My Favorite Authors List

  1. Chuck Black
Looking to be entertained while also learning and growing in your Christian faith…AND looking for a wide age range? Chuck Black is the author for you! His books have never failed to teach me something new, while being hooked to every written word. These books are great for the young reader, while not leaving out the mature adult. I recommend all his books, from the inspiring and emotionally packed medieval allegories in The Kingdom Series to the heart thumping sci fi adventures in the Wars of the Realm! His daughter also writes the music for the audio books, which adds to the adventure.
  2. Daniel Schwabauer
Call me prejudiced, if you like, but even if he hadn’t taught me almost everything I know about writing, Dan would still end up on my favorite authors list! His writing applies the lessons he teaches, and I never have to worry if his books are going to be too slow or too many overwhelming details for me. Again, I recommend ALL his books, but Runt the Brave is a GREAT place to start. I promise you, the first sentence will have you hooked!
  3. C.S. Lewis
We all know about his most famous work The Chronicles of Narnia, but Clive Staples Lewis has written many other great works of fiction and non-fiction Christian apologetics. Converting to Christianity from atheism, Lewis’ passion for his faith comes through dramatically in his writings, while also awakening the imagination of children and adults alike. Aside from the obvious Narnia series, I also recommend The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity.

Wish to know another fun fact about C.S. Lewis? He fought in the first world war and was part of a literary group, known as the Inklings, along with…
  4. J.R.R. Tolkien
A close friend of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien is the author of the famous Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I go into a little more detail about his writing in this previous article so I will not bore you by my repetitiveness. Let me just say that such detail in world and character building, the creation of a complete language, and detailed descriptions and backstories…all while avoiding overwhelming the reader with unnecessary words or bringing them out of the story…I find very rare. As a second option, I recommend his book The Hobbit.
  5. Douglas Bond
The Crown and Covenant Series had me glued to every page! Douglas Bond makes historical fiction such a thrill, while bringing in Christian values and family. This series, while a favorite, takes place during a pretty violent time in Scottish history, so it might be better suited for an older audience.
